We invite you to help…… The C.A.P.S. National Crisis line is staffed by a volunteer group of telephone support workers with open minds and compassionate hearts. These are ordinary people trained for the extraordinary role of talking to those affected by child abuse in its many forms. C.A.P.S. volunteers come from across Sydney & draw on their own life skills as well as the knowledge gained in their C.A.P.S. training to help those in need. To become a C.A.P.S. telephone support worker, volunteers participate in a training course 1 day a week for 9 weeks, which provides an introduction to the various types of child abuse issues, services available & coping strategies. Drawing on its 30-year history in helping prevent child abuse, C.A.P.S. also provides a list of resources that support workers can offer callers. A story from C.A.P.S. volunteer - "I wouldn't give it up for anything!" “People ask me how I can bear to do it, but it’s actually tremendously positive to help people start healing. Most of our callers are well-meaning people who are under incredible pressure from illness, financial stresses or geographic isolation. Often, they simply don’t get to voice their fears or frustrations with anyone they can trust. So the pressure mounts up to the point where it becomes too great - and that’s where we step in. A large part of our job as telephone support workers is just to listen to our callers. For many callers, just being heard during difficult times can make a big difference. But of course, we also provide advice - perhaps on parenting skills, or access to further community services as required - to help resolve some of their pressures. We are able to be of some assistance to the vast majority of our callers. And there’s tremendous camaraderie among the C.A.P.S. support workers, too, so we’re always able to maintain an atmosphere of hope. We also do follow up calls wherever possible to help callers truly make a new start. Being a volunteer takes only a few hours out of my week but just being there for callers can help them make the changes that make all the difference to a child’s life. I wouldn’t give it up for
anything.” Lorraine L. Our next Training course starts soon. All
